Media and Editorial Officer
We are looking for an outstanding media professional to build United Purpose’s profile in traditional and social media to build support for UP, and its work and vision of harnessing disruptive innovation to empower poor communities around the world and defeat poverty.
The postholderwill work with others to develop creative and effective communication campaigns to help secure income, build partnerships, and advance UP’s influence and development impact. They will develop relationships across traditional and social media channels, managing UP’s related content management systems, and providing proactive liaison with journalists and internal and external stakeholders to secure media coverage. They will also undertake proactive scanning of the media and social media landscape for trends and opportunities for UP to project its messages, and of coverage and profile secured as a result.
They will develop and implement plansto secure coverage and voicein the Wales, UK and international media and in social media channelsin support of its wider communications strategy. They will write, edit and commission content for UP’s website and social media output across a wide range of registers and audiences from members of the public donating to UP’s work to businesspeople or innovators who could partner with UP to advance its goals. In liaison with others across UP’s teams and country programmes they will gather content and project strong, consistent and vibrant communication of UP’s messages and work. They will manage UP’s website, social media channels and on-line presence. They will work with other members of the team to support income generation through effective communications to target audiences - as well as managing day-to-day liaison with external suppliers, agencies, and freelancers related to the role.
We are looking for someone with strong experience of developing and delivering media and social media communications strategies. They need to be able to distil, humanise and communicate complex issues of international development and social innovation for a range of audiences, with excellent journalistic, copy writing, commissioning and editing skills. They need a good nose for news and a good story, together with knowledge of the requirements of journalists and experience ofpositioning and pitching stories and ideas to journalists, producers and social media gatekeepers. Andthey need to be able to develop relationships with journalists, bloggers and digital community influencers. They need to be creative, high ambition, persistent and able to initiate and build new projects and approaches. Knowledge of development, international affairs and environmental sustainability issues would be a distinct advantage though not essential as long as they can show they would readily be able to get to grips with the issues and context.
Reports to: Head of Communications
Salary: £25-30k p.a. plus contributory pension.
Location: Cardiff; regular travel to UP offices in London and Bakewell.
