Global Director of External Affairs
We are looking for an outstanding person to lead our new External Affairs Department to engage our audiences and mobilise resources to back UP’s vision of harnessing disruptive innovation to help poor communities around the world empower themselves.
We need someone who can shape and lead our strategy to develop new business and fundraising, both from established sources like government, foundations and individuals, but also more innovative income sources such as our in-house carbon offset business CarbonUP and other social enterprise initiatives. The postholder will also shape and oversee UP’s work to engage, influence and build our brand profile across the range of audiences needed to achieve UP’s organisational objectives including embracing disruptive innovation to empower poor communities.
Alongside the CEO, this post will play a key role in developing and managing senior level relationships with stakeholders across civil society, government, donors, business and other partners in Wales, the UK, and internationally. It will help build political and stakeholder alliances and relationships to expand UP’s influence and voice, secure new funding, and shape debate and thinking in the sector.
As a member of UP’s Senior Management Team the postholder will also help shape and lead UP’s overall direction including continuing to transform the organisation in line with its new strategy. They will play a key role in advising the CEO and Board of Trustees, as well as providing accountability against plans agreed by them. They will be joining at a very exciting time for the organisation with further major new organisational announcements in the pipeline. They will also operate as the senior point of liaison across the organisation in the UK and with its country programmes across the world to ensure global coherence on UP’s external profile and income generation plans.
The postholder will need to have significant experience of fundraising, communications and marketing (preferably, but not necessarily, in a not-for-profit context). Experience of international development is not essential – though a proven ability to quickly understand the issues and debates is. They will need to show a strong track record of developing and delivering successful income generation strategies, together with entrepreneurial flair and commercial acumen across a range of funding approaches. They will also need to show they can build and project a not-for-profit brand that has a powerful and distinctive vision in an ever-more crowded marketplace. They need to be proactive, creative, can-do and highly productive – and able to build and lead a new team to be the same.
