Over a quarter of the Brazilian population are poor. Despite its growing economy and influence, Brazil remains one of the most unequal countries in the world. United Purpose has worked in Brazil since 1981. Our country office is based in Joao Pessoa, Paraíba, in North East Brazil. This area is the poorest and most underdeveloped part in all of Latin America.
The most vulnerable groups in this region are women and children. United Purpose works with them in their communities to help: lobby government to access good basic services such as healthcare, sanitation & education; enable women to earn an income to improve their families’ health & nutrition; promote peace within youth groups, families & communities to reduce violence; prevent the exploitation of children and create better life opportunities.
