COVID-19: Our response in Guinea

The challenges in Guinea

  • At the end of January there were 750 active cases of Covid-19 in Guinea. The trend has been declining overall for several weeks. There have been 14,000 confirmed cases and 81 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

  • Guinea was better prepared than other countries to deal with this epidemic as networks and protocols for action against the Ebola epidemic were still fresh.

  • The spread of the epidemic has been concentrated around Conakry and, despite a few cases, has not spread widely in the provinces.

  • A curfew from midnight to 5am is in effect, the wearing of masks is, in theory, mandatory on the street and in offices. Groups of more than 25 people are still prohibited and taxis are limited to 3 passengers (theoretically).

  • It appears that the state authorities have made an agreement with the Russian government for the supply of vaccines.

What United Purpose is doing...

  • United Purpose in Guinea continues to raise awareness and inform the population through its projects and actions.

  • Our employees must lead by example and have an impeccable attitude to barrier and preventive actions.

  • We raise awareness of the communities we meet and use posters and flyers that are very visual and easy to understand.

  • In each of the projects we submit to our donors, a Covid budget line is included with the necessary health equipment as well as training of target populations.

What was achieved in 2020…

In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, we carried out massive awareness campaigns in sensitive neighbourhoods of Conakry and Kankan. Our teams of sensitizers met the population, the merchants, the health workers, the teachers... to explain to them the precautionary actions to take and to adopt. We also printed posters that we pasted in all the strategic locations of the neighbourhoods we visited and flyers that we distributed.

Also, a very simple and text less video clip was made and broadcast on social networks and on local television channels.
