COVID-19: Our response in Senegal

The challenges in Senegal

  • 27th July 2021 there were 763 Covid cases with 58 serious cases and more than 7 deaths.

  • There has been a shortage of vaccines but it is now available again.

The vaccination centres are full with people wanting to be vaccinated due to the rise in cases. But there is still a reluctance due to the fact that people who have been vaccinated have had Covid and some have died.

  • Teleworking is recommended and wearing a mask is mandatory.

  • Public and private hospitals are overwhelmed.

  • More than 7,000 small and medium-sized enterprises have been declared bankrupt. The very fragile economy means that, unlike the first wave, the State of Senegal has admitted that it has no financial resources to invest in people in the informal economy (at least 70% of all workers in Senegal) beyond the package offered during the first wave.

  • Buying masks, hand gels and soaps has now become a luxury for many, and is not necessarily imposed by the authorities, leaving people exposed to Covid19.

  • At school level it is not possible for underfunded schools to ensure that all staff and teachers have a regular supply of masks, hand gel or even water to wash their hands.

What United Purpose is doing...

  • A day of remobilisation was organised on 23 June 2021 by the Africanist organisation, which had drawn up a map of the 19 organisations active in raising awareness of Covid.

  • The awareness campaign for vaccinations has been delayed due to the absence of the vaccine, but we are now in the process of developing the materials to raise awareness of the importance of the vaccine.

  • We have installed 510 handwashing basins in strategic locations such as markets, mosques, village assembly points and school entrances.

  • We have distributed health and hygiene equipment to vulnerable population groups such as the homeless, medical or school staff, merchants or school children, among others:

    o   8000 reusable masks

    o   3200 medical quality masks

    o   2000 pairs of gloves

o   550 boxes of hand gel

o   500 bottles of bleach for house hygiene

    o   1100 bars of soap

    o   10 contact-free thermometers

  • We have broadcast 90 programmes discussing essential prevention information through community radio stations and mosque radios.

  • 2,831 voice-based messages were sent to beneficiaries’ mobile phones to disseminate information on the correct use of face masks and other prevention measures.

  • Training of more than 30 community volunteers to sensitise the public on the pandemic has occurred.

  • 12,000 people have been given advice and support on Covid prevention measures. Two information caravans employing song and dance to transfer their messages were used.

  • We have disseminated relevant information on the Covid-19 pandemic in a child-friendly way to around 400 vulnerable children in 13 koranic schools.

  • We have distributed four tons of essential food items to the koranic schools to reduce the children’s exposure to the public and hence reduce their infection risk.

  • Ten schools received support in implementing social distancing throughout their facilities and in conducting graduation exams in a safe way.

  • Eight mosques were supported in safely reopening to the public with planning and material support.

  • Training of 30 business owners in business development to alleviate the effects of the pandemic on their livelihoods, out of which 28 have received micro-loans to allow for strategic investments (the remaining two will receive such loans at the time they chose).
