United Purpose Malawi launched its 2021-2025 ambitious country strategy
On 16th June, 2021, UP Malawi launched a new five-year country strategy setting more ambitious and progressive goals and affirming its commitment to work towards the realization of the Government of Malawi’s Vision 2063.
The launching ceremony took place virtually with more than 110 people in attendance. The event was led by UP Malawi’s Country Director, Kate Hartley-Louis, with support from keynote speakers, including the Honourable Minister of Energy of Malawi, H.E. the Ambassador of Ireland to Malawi, UP Chief Executive Officer and the Director for Development Planning at Malawi National Planning Commission.
“This strategy provides a framework for UP to support the Government of Malawi to progress towards a self-reliant Malawi in line with the Vision 2063. It represents a refinement of our organisational direction and it is UP’s way of responding to a complex, changing world,” stated Kate Hartley-Louis.
In her remarks, UP CEO, Linda Edwards, highlighted that strategic partnerships will become ever more critical in these complex times and reaffirmed UP’s commitment to continue supporting the government of Malawi in achieving its Sustainable Development Goal targets.
The Minister of Energy of Malawi, Mr. Newton Kambala, commended UP on the alignment of the new strategy to the realization of Malawi Vision 2063. The Minister further highlighted the impact of UP’s collaboration towards the two million improved cookstoves by 2020 target. “United Purpose is a key partner and they have proven their willingness and capacity to work in networks and deliver tangible and long-term results,” the Minister said.
H.E the Ambassador of Ireland to Malawi, Mr. Seamus O’Grady, commended UP’s professionalism and commitment. “We have been impressed with how the organization has evolved over the years and, in particular, we welcome the increase in emphasis in this strategy on system strengthening. (…) The new strategy builds on an already strong tradition of aligning with national and district priorities,” the Ambassador said.
Malawi’s Country Director Hartley-Louis underscored UP’s commitment to a system strengthening approach, saying that this is integral for government, the private sector and other partners to work together to deliver sustainable services. “As we know, systems change is a long-term process and we will continue to deliver on the ground with the government and civil society whilst we strengthen the systems on which people depend, to enable us to fulfil our mission to move beyond aid,” she said.
UP Malawi is developing a M&E framework that will monitor the organisation’s progress against the strategy and we look forward to seeing their achievements over the next five years.
