Moving the goalposts: equipping girls through football

mtg2.JPG

Our partner organisation, Moving the Goalposts (MTG), uses football as a tool to promote the personal, educational, physical and financial development of marginalised girls. MTG operates in the Kenyan coastal counties of Kilifi and Kwale, where girls and young women face many challenges. Both counties are ranked among the poorest in Kenya. Illiteracy levels are high, and only 11 out of 20 girls proceed to secondary school.

MTG works with over 8,000 girls and young women between the ages of nine and 25. Through regular football sessions and peer support, the project works to help girls and young women have improved access to education and training, learn about reproductive health, meet positive role models and learn skills to gain financial independence. Community football tournaments are used to tackle harmful practices and attitudes against women and girls.
