Meet Sally Jarjou/ Dyma Sally Jarjou

In Kassange, a community in the West Coast Region of The Gambia, United Purpose has supported women farmers to work together to change their harvesting habits, increase their yields and share information about best practices.

All the women famers have reported improved health for their children, additional income though producing extra crops, less need for borrowing, and an overall change in their lives for the better.

Sally Jarjou, one of the farmers, said:

“Before the project we all knew very little about healthy cooking and would cook the same meals all the time. Now we know how to cook without losing the nutrients stored in the food, which means everyone is becoming stronger. We have also been able to combine our new recipes with traditional dishes so that the whole community is accepting of the new meals.”

Sally is just one of 31,500 farmers (mainly women) that UP’s COVID-19 response project, funded by the Welsh Government, has supported in The Gambia.

Yn Kassange, cymuned yn Rhanbarth West Coast yn Gambia, mae ffermwyr benywaidd wedi bod yn cydweithio i newid eu harferion cynaeafu a chynyddu eu cynhaeaf.

Profodd pob un o’r ffermwyr benywaidd lwyddiannau tebyg yn sgil y prosiect, gan gynnwys gwell iechyd i’w plant, incwm ychwanegol drwy gynhyrchu cnydau ychwanegol, llai o angen am fenthyca, a newid cyffredinol er gwell yn eu bywydau.

Dywedodd Sally Jarjou, un o’r ffermwyr benywaidd:

“Cyn y prosiect, ychydig iawn oedden ni’n ei wybod am goginio’n iach, ac fe fydden ni’n coginio’r un prydau drwy’r amser. Nawr rydyn ni’n gwybod sut i goginio heb golli’r maetholion sydd yn y bwyd, sy’n golygu bod pawb yn cryfhau. Rydyn ni hefyd wedi gallu cyfuno ein ryseitiau newydd gyda phrydau traddodiadol fel bod y gymuned gyfan yn derbyn y prydau newydd.”

Mae Sally yn un yn unig o’r 31,500 o ffermwyr (merched yn bennaf) y mae prosiect ymated COVID-19 UP, a ariennir gan Lywodraeth Cymru, wedi’i gefnogi yn y Gambia.
