Our nutrition project in The Gambia has established Mother Clubs to improve the health of babies and young children in rural areas. Each week, the clubs hold cooking demonstrations to train local mothers how to prepare nutritious, bio-fortified food.
Improving nutrition for pregnant women
In rural areas of The Gambia, pregnant women often experience anaemia. This is due to limited access to adequate healthcare and low awareness about maternal nutrition. Severe anaemia during pregnancy is a problem because it can increase the risk of premature birth, having a low birth weight baby and postpartum depression.

Nigeria: Menstruation matters
In Nigeria, 130 million people (two-thirds of the population) do not have access to adequate sanitation. The fact that many women and girls do not have the facilities to manage their menstrual hygiene restricts their access to education and their participation in society, as well as endangering their health. Social taboos surrounding menstruation make the problem even more difficult to address.
