Meet Kaddy /Dyma Kaddy
Kaddy belongs to a Mother’s Club in Gunjur, The Gambia. Supported by United Purpose, these clubs provide a collective support system for mothers in the local communities and knowledge about the nutritional benefits of bio-fortified crops for their children.
As a result of UP’s project, Kaddy has started growing orange-fleshed sweet potatoes in her garden and bio-fortified wholegrain pearl millet on her small plot of land – both for her family to eat and for her to sell in markets.
Kaddy says: “The cooking demonstrations [at the mother’s club] brings all the mothers in the local community together, where we share ideas of cooking and increasing our children’s health. Pre-project I was not comfortable due to my child’s poor health, she was always pale and had cracking skin. Now she is very happy, playful and growing in intelligence. These new crops have saved my daughter’s life. The clinic now always gives me the thumbs up when we go for a check, it is such a relief.”
United Purpose supported 120 Mother’s Clubs across The Gambia, with 6,000 members, with funding from the Welsh Government. Families like Kaddy’s are now healthier and more resilient to COVID-19 and other illnesses.
Mae Kaddy yn perthyn i glwb mamau yn Gunjur, Y Gambia. Mae’r clybiau hyn, a gefnogir gan United Purpose, yn darparu system gymorth gyfunol ar gyfer mamau yn y cymunedau lleol a gwybodaeth am fanteision maethol cnydau bio-gadarn i’w plant.
O ganlyniad i brosiect UP, mae Kaddy wedi dechrau tyfu tatws melys oren gnawd yn ei gardd a miled perl grawn cyflawn bio-gaerog ar ei llain fach o dir – ermwyn i’w theulu eu bwyta ac ermwyn iddi eu gwerthu mewn marchnadoedd.
Dywed Kaddy: “Mae’r arddangosiadau coginio (yn y Clwb Mamau) yn dod â holl famau’r gymuned leol at eu gilydd lle rydyn ni’n rhannu syniadau am ginio a chynyddu iechyd ein palnt. Cyn y prosiect, roeddwn yn teimlo’n anghyfforddus oherwydd iechyd gwael fy mhlentyn. Roedd hi bob amser yn welw ac roedd ei chroen yn frau. Nawr mae hi’n hapus iawn, yn chwareus ac yn deall mwy a mwy. Mae’r cnydau newydd hyn wedi achub bywyd fy merch. Pan fyddwn ni’n mynd am apwyntiad i’r clinig, maen nhw bob tro’n codi bawd a dweud bod popeth yn iawn. Mae’n gymaint o ryddhad.”
