Meet Robert /Dyma Robert

Robert lives in a village in Cross River State, Nigeria. When the pandemic hit, misinformation about COVID-19 was rife in his community. Some people were scared to go out, while others didn’t believe the virus was real. Robert took action through the use of language. In summer 2021, he attended training sessions led by United Purpose about preventing the spread of COVID-19. He helped his community by giving them the information, training and education that they needed in their own language. 

 Robert says: “I showed people the posters and used our language to explain about COVID and how to prevent it. To ensure that my people benefit, I was one of the first to get vaccinated. When I talk to others about the value of being vaccinated, I can truly say I have been vaccinated and nothing bad has happened to me.” With Welsh Government funding, United Purpose trained 392 health workers on COVID-19 protocols in Nigeria and reached 844,368 people through door-to-door COVID awareness campaigns.

Yn ystod haf 2021, mynychodd sesiynau hyfforddi dan arweiniad United Purpose yn tynnu sylw at sut i atal COVID-19 rhag lledaenu. Helpodd ei gymuned drwy rannu'r wybodaeth, yr hyfforddiant a'r addysg angenrheidiol yn eu hiaith frodorol. 

 Dywed Robert: “Fe wnes i ddangos y posteri i bobl a defnyddio ein hiaith ni i esbonio COVID-19 a sut i'w atal. Er mwyn sicrhau bod fy mhobl i'n elwa, fi oedd un o'r rhai cyntaf i gael y brechlyn. Pan fydda i'n siarad ag eraill am werth cael y brechlyn, dwi’n gallu dweud fy mod i wedi cael fy mrechu a does dim byd drwg wedi digwydd i mi.” Hyfforddodd United Purpose 392 o weithwyr iechyd ar brotocolau COVID-19 yn Nigeria, o ganlyniad i brosiect ymateb i COVID-19 dan nawdd Llywodraeth Cymru.
