Eduardo Varandas, Federal Prosecutor with the Brazilian Prosecution Office for Labour Issues (MPT), provides a first-hand account of the first successful use of civil class actions in Paraíba, Brazil; a ground-breaking approach to the prosecution and prevention of child sexual exploitation.
Modelled on success stories emerging out of Brazil, this seminar will discuss the possible implementation of civil class actions internationally as an effective method of tackling child sexual exploitation. In Brazil these civil class actions have provided compensation for child protection services closing the circle between prosecution and protection.
The seminar is organised by United Purpose, in partnership with ECPAT UK and King’s College London. The panel will feature Eduardo Varandas (Brazilian Public Prosecutor), Bharti Patel (CEO of ECPAT UK) and Kathryn Llewellyn (CEO of United Purpose). The event will be chaired by David Bull, former CEO of UNICEF UK/ Sir Martin Davidson former CEO of the British Council.
