Women working together to improve lives

In Kassange, a community in the West Coast Region of The Gambia, women farmers have been working together to change their harvesting habits and increase their yields. They support each other by sharing information on best practices and ideas for using the crops they grow to feed their families and the wider community.

All the women famers shared similar success stories from the project, including improved health for their children, additional income though producing extra crops, less need for borrowing, and an overall change in their lives for the better.

Sally Jarjou, one of the women farmers, said:

“Before the project we all knew very little about healthy cooking and would cook the same meals all the time. Now we know how to cook without losing the nutrients stored in the food, which means everyone is becoming stronger. We have also been able to combine our new recipes with traditional dishes so that the whole community is accepting of the new meals.”

Context:

All this has been achieved through the training and inputs provided by the Welsh Government-funded COVID-19 Response project, which has provided increased food security and economic resilience to communities in The Gambia. Funded by the Welsh Government, United Purpose’s COVID-19 response project in Guinea aims to reduce the impact of the pandemic in the Upper Region. We are doing this by building the capacity of health care centres, spreading accurate information about COVID-19 prevention, and supporting vaccination initiatives. Meet the people helping us make this happen…

Aelama belongs to a Mother’s Club in The Gambia - a collective support system for mothers in local communities that provides information about nutrition, growing biofortified crops, and recipe ideas. As a mother to a young daughter, Aelama has seen first-hand the benefits of a more nutritious and balanced diet - and how simple changes can result in life-changing impacts for her family.
